For 40 years, Asleep at the Wheel has kept rolling along, dedicated to keeping American roots music, especially western swing, alive and kicking. Along the way they have earned nine Grammy awards, released more than 25 albums, and filled venues of all sizes. Frontman Ray Benson calls western swing “jazz with a cowboy hat,” a musical melting pot from fiddle tunes and country bluegrass, to blues and big band. Returning to the Bankhead Theater for the fifth time, Asleep at the Wheel’s toe-tapping music and rich harmonies hold a unique place both in the music world and in the hearts of their fans.
