Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center will host its fourth annual Native American Day at the Bankhead Theater Shea Homes plaza. The family friendly event for all ages, offered in association with Livermore’s American Indian Center, will include a tipi tour of a 20-foot Lakota tipi, dancing and singing, artifacts, free crafts provided by volunteers for all students and Native American food selections.
The American Indian Center Children’s Pow Wow program will start at noon with introductions and a message from local dignitaries, and end at 5 pm with the announcement of contest winners. At this pow wow, there will be dance contests for participants by age groups for both boys and girls up to age 18 for different categories.
This event is sponsored by LVPAC and presented with the assistance of Mary Puthoff of the Native American Center in Livermore. A program specialist within the Livermore school district, Mary has worked for more than four decades to preserve and share the cultural traditions of the tribes from this area — the Ohlone, Miwok and Yokuts — with students and adults in the Tri-Valley and beyond.
