As we bid the sizzling season adieu, here are four of the Tri-Valley’s most anticipated events to end summer on a high note. Enjoy!
1. 2015 Eugene O’Neill Festival
September 4–October 4, Danville
Eugene O’Neill, the only American playwright to win the Nobel Prize in literature, once called Danville home—and he wrote some of his last, most poignant pieces there. Every year, the town dedicates a month to honor his legacy. Events take place all over Danville, but most notably at Tao House, O’Neill’s former estate and a National Historic Site. This year’s events have the overarching theme of “desire,” with panels, productions and more. For the lineup, go here.
A Literal “Don’t Miss”: Desire Under the Elms, a tragic play by O’Neill, was produced in 1924, and it was one of the last written at his estate. This year, the O’Neill Festival will feature a special production of the play at the Old Barn at Tao House. Classic movie buffs may recall this piece of work from its film adaptation in 1958 starring Sophia Loren.
2. 34th Annual Harvest Wine Celebration
September 6, Livermore
Every Labor Day Weekend, we raise a glass to the local wine scene at the 34th Annual Harvest Wine Celebration. Event happenings can be found at more than 30 tasting rooms. Think wine tasting, arts, crafts and music—clearly, a few of the Tri Valley’s favorite things. All ticket holders will receive a program, commemorative wine glass, admission to all participating tasting rooms and at least two tastings from each of the pouring partners. Check out the Livermore Valley Wine Trolley to travel between four of the west side wineries in style.
Festival Philanthropy: A designated driver ticket is only $5 and proceeds go to “Every 15 Minutes,” a global organization that shows teenagers and families the detrimental effects of drinking and driving.
3. Splatter Food, Art & Wine Festival
September 19, Dublin
Dublin’s “not your ordinary food, art & wine festival” is gearing up for another year of bringing local eats, drinks and arts together at Emerald Glen Park. At the heart of the festival is the Tasting Pavilion, where a $30 passport will get you 18 tastes of any combination of food or beverage from some of the Tri-Valley’s most popular restaurants and wineries. Game Changer: The festival has historically ended with a bang, but recently, the City of Dublin has opted to change out their firework finale for a laser light show. Splatter will wrap up 2015’s festivities with an optical adventure for the whole family.
4. Danville D’Elegance
September 19-20, Danville
Danville D’Elegance is a weekend dedicated to cars—for a cause. It’s recognized as this year’s “Danville Charitable Organization of the Year” and is one of the leading fundraisers for Parkinson’s research, education and care. There will be an organized driving tour, elegant dinner at the famed Blackhawk Auto Museum and a Downtown Danville street fest packed with good company, great food and a spectacular auto show.
Join the EnTourage: If you want to take to the country roads, join the Tour d’Elegance, an organized drive through the scenic Bay Area—from Danville to Napa County and the beautiful space in between. If you’re visiting, this is one of the best (and not to mention most charitable!) ways to get familiar with the area. Guests are invited to drive their own modern or vintage models, but wouldn’t it be more fun to rent something exotic from a participating sponsor? Either way, it’s going to be a wild ride.
