Hiking East Shore Loop at Del Valle Regional Park

The East Shore Loop Trail in Del Valle Regional Park offers a moderately challenging hike with scenic views of Lake Del Valle and the surrounding East Bay hills. Here’s a guide to help you navigate this trail:

Overview

  • Length: Approximately 4.5 miles
  • Elevation Gain: Around 725 feet
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Estimated Hiking Time: 2 to 3 hours
  • Trail Surface: Dirt and loose gravel
  • Dog-Friendly: Allowed on leash in developed area & off leash on trails

Directions

  1. Start at the Arroyo Road Staging Area: From the parking area, head south to begin the East Shore Trail.
  2. Cross Arroyo Valle Creek: Shortly after starting, you’ll cross a bridge over Arroyo Valle Creek, which drains the Del Valle Reservoir.
  3. Ascend the Ridge: After the creek, the trail ascends approximately 450 feet to a ridge. This is the most strenuous part of the hike.
  4. Reach the Overlook: At the ridge, there’s a bench offering expansive views of the valley and Lake Del Valle—a great spot for a rest.
  5. Descend via Heron Bay Trail: From the overlook, turn right onto the Heron Bay Trail, which descends toward the lake and winds through patches of trees.
  6. Rejoin East Shore Trail: After about 0.8 miles on Heron Bay Trail, it intersects with East Shore Trail. Turn left to begin a gradual ascent back up the ridge.
  7. Return to Trailhead: Continue on East Shore Trail as it descends back to the Arroyo Road Staging Area, completing the loop.
