The Tri-Valley, located 30 miles East of San Francisco, provides a nurturing home to well over 50 unique wineries. Though lacking the high profiles of better known locations like Sonoma and Napa, this region occupies a prominent position in California’s wine history and quality that gives it a very competitive stature. Dating all the way back to the 1840s, Robert Livermore was the first to plant wine grapes in the valley, and so it began.

Later, in 1882, Charles Wetmore, Secretary of the California Viticultural Commission was dismayed that San Francisco restaurants offered inferior French wines for premium prices while often relegating superior California wines to “house” wine status, established Cresta Blanca Vineyards here. He realized he had stumbled upon a flourishing gravel-based terrain that reminded him of the successful wineries in Bordeaux, from where he brought many vines to develop his own California take on the classic French wine. His Sauterne Souvenir was a remarkable success.

In 1883, two of Livermore Valley’s vineyards, Concannon and Wente, began legacies that would set the tone for the wine industry for many decades to come. Both survived Prohibition and are still leaders to this day. James Concannon, another Bordeaux enthusiast, followed in Wetmore’s footsteps and imported Cabernet Sauvignon vines straight from their source. Little did he know his future grandson, Jim, would later work with UC Davis and use those vines to develop the famous Concannon Cabernet Clones that are responsible for helping produce 80% of California’s Cabernet Sauvignon. During that same time, Jim bottled the first Petite Sirah varietal wine, something they are well recognized for to this day.

Wente is the oldest family-run winery in the country. They became famous for conceiving the beloved Chardonnay, which they were the first to bottle in 1936. Today, Chardonnay is the most popular wine in the world. Most of the Chardonnay grapes in California descend from Wente Chardonnay Clones.  German immigrant, C.H. Wente, had hoped California would give him a better future, and he was right. Now, five generations later, Karl D. Wente is working hard to maintain the Wente legacy and all it stands for.

Today, the Livermore Valley wine region has blossomed to over 50 wineries and continues to follow in the footsteps of its founders, priding themselves on their love for quality wine and the personal wineries that curate them. In 1981, Livermore Valley formed the Winegrowers Association. Members range from Eagle Ridge Vineyard, a family owned winery whose tasting room is overflowing with the grandchildren that they even named some of their delicious ports after, like “MadLyn,” to Darcie Kent Vineyards, whose labels are based upon Darcie Kent’s original art, and whose winemaker, Julian Halasz is a 4th generation Hungarian born handcrafter of wines from sustainably grown grapes. The Livermore Valley wine country has much to offer—a deep rooted history that gave life to the family focused vineyards and wineries that continue to mature gracefully with their wines.
